Important Update: Season 2 is unlikely to have Percy Hynes White, Jamie McShane, or Naomi J. Ogawa return.

Something Big In Wednesday

  • In Netflix’s gothic Wednesday series, Jenna Ortega will take the lead role without a love subplot, focusing instead on horror themes in Season 2.
  • New storylines at Nevermore Academy will take the place of beloved characters Percy Hynes White and Naomi J. Ogawa, who will not be returning as series regulars.
  • As a producer, Ortega steps up to turn up the terror, guaranteeing a bone-chilling experience in Season 2 with less cutesy-cutesy banter.

Jenna Ortega is the perfect choice to play the wonderfully macabre protagonist in the upcoming season of Wednesday, the gothic popular show on Netflix, which revealed some huge casting news this morning. There will not be any familiar faces roaming the ghostly corridors of Nevermore Academy as its doors swung open once more. The series regular roles of Percy Hynes White and Naomi J Ogawa, who gave birth to fan favorites Xavier Thorpe and Yoko Tanaka, respectively, are ending, while Jamie McShane will only be returning as a guest star, playing the troubled Sheriff Donovan Galpin.

Wednesday

In the Season 1 finale, the returning Hunter Doohan played Tyler, the nice sheriff, who was left stunned to learn that his son was the terrifying Hyde. As Tyler attempted to morph his way out of a precarious situation in a classic monster movie cliffhanger, the plot intensified. However, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, who plays Deputy Ritchie Santiago, is joining the cast as a series regular. This announcement suggests a fresh narrative avenue to pursue, with the possibility of a new sheriff patrolling these parts. Galpin’s badge may be gaining some shine again.

Regarding White’s psychic lead, Xavier, rumour mills swirled stories about his possible departure even as Deadline revealed that he had extended his option last year, despite Xavier saving his skin in the finale and igniting the screen on Wednesday. For her part, Ortega thought the romantic aspects of the show did not fit her role well and was not really romantic.

A less stunning but no less heartbreaking update came with Ogawa’s Yoko, who found herself slipping into the background despite her cool vampire credentials and ties to the mysterious Nightshade Society. In addition to coming back in front of the camera, Ortega is also moving behind it as a producer, promising to ramp up the terror while bringing down the teenage drama. The cast changes do make a lot of sense in light of the news of the series’ new direction. So get ready, romantics and horror fans alike—Wednesday Season 2 seems to be going to be less romantic and more of a terrifying experience.

Our Opinion: When I heard that Netflix was going to release a series of ‘Wednesday, I was very excited, as I love to watch horror and thriller shows or movies, but there was disappointment because of the lovey-dovey scenes, so I am really happy to know that there would be more terrifying scenes instead of romance.
