The next adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will follow Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, has a director. The Hollywood Reporter claims that negotiations are underway for Destin Daniel Cretton to direct the fourth Spider-Man film. The next installment’s premise has not yet been revealed, but both Disney and Sony are reportedly prioritizing the project. Filming for the wall-crawler’s next episode may start early in 2019. Accompanying the news was no definite date for the movie’s release.

Peter Parker was last seen in a major motion picture during the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the film, which took in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, the protagonist beseeches Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) for assistance following Mysterio’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) revelation of his true identity. As a result, there would be a collision of realities, allowing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to bring their respective Spider-Men characters back to life.

Following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel Studios has previously considered the potential of making another Spider-Man film. However, in the years after the release of the enormous movie, the company has been concentrating on other projects. Sony Pictures proceeded to work on spin-offs like Kraven the Hunter and Venom: The Last Dance concurrently. But now it is time for the amiable neighborhood vigilante of New York City to make a big screen comeback in the fourth Spider-Man movie.

Destin Daniel Cretton and Marvel Studios are still having a great working relationship. Prior to this, the filmmaker worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which debuted Simu Liu as a captivating hero. The director recently worked on Wonder Man as well. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play an actor who develops abilities in the upcoming Disney+ television series. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was originally slated for director Cretton, but the project’s priorities were altered. Though it will not be focused on Earth’s greatest heroes, it looks the director has landed another huge movie at the studio.

The arrival of the fourth Spider-Man film may come at a very complex moment for the MCU’s characters. The San Diego Comic-Con this year made clear how some of the franchise’s next initiatives will directly lead to Avengers: Doomsday. After playing Tony Stark for nearly ten years, Robert Downey Jr. will return to the franchise with the huge crossover, taking on the role of the villainous Doctor Doom.

The fourth Spider-Man film has not yet been given a release date. Check back with Collider for additional updates. You can watch Spider-Man: No Way Home on FX Now in the meantime.
